Master the Art of Seascape & Long Exposure Photography
Join fine-art landscape photographer Chris Ewen Crosby for an elite, two-part masterclass. Learn how to safely navigate changing tides, predict coastal light, and utilize professional filter systems to turn chaotic waves into striking fine art.
The Ocean Doesn’t Sit Still. Your Camera Shouldn't Either.
Photographing the coastline is an intoxicating experience, but it is incredibly easy to walk away disappointed. Your images look flat, the white water looks like a blown-out mess, or worse—you realize too late that you didn’t properly balance your exposure for the harsh coastal glare.
Many photographers struggle to capture the emotional energy of the Pacific because they are fighting their settings instead of reading the water. They guess on shutter speeds and hope for the best.
There is a definitive science to capturing water movement. This workshop eliminates the guesswork, giving you a repeatable workflow to confidently capture elite, portfolio-ready seascape imagery.
Engineered for Creative Mastery
Part I – The Field Preparation (Online Lecture)
Thursday Evening (6:30 PM – 8:00 PM) via Google Meet
Mastery begins before your boots touch the wet sand. In this interactive technical briefing, we will break down how to read complex surf forecasts, track incoming tides, analyze coastal topology, and plan compositions. We will also deep-dive into the essential gear requirements, including polarizer mechanics and utilizing Neutral Density (ND) filters to control your shutter speed in bright environments.
Part II – The Coastal Session (In-the-Field)
Saturday Afternoon (2 Hours starting well before Sunset)
Meet on-location at a premier Southern California coastline. Standing side-by-side in a hyper-intimate group, you’ll learn the exact timing needed to trigger your shutter as waves recede around rocks, how to protect your gear from sea spray, and receive real-time, personalized settings adjustments as the golden hour fades into a coastal twilight.
What You’ll Master
The Anatomy of Water Motion: Discover the specific shutter speed ranges that create distinct textures—from violent, high-detail splash captures to ethereal, misty long exposures.
Advanced Filter Mechanics: Learn how to properly stack Solid and Graduated Neutral Density filters to balance a bright sky with dark coastal rocks without losing data.
Dynamic Coastal Composition: Master the use of receding water lines as natural foreground leading elements that pull the viewer’s eye directly into your frame.
Tide & Safety Forecasting: Learn the professional apps, tools, and safety protocols required to confidently scout and shoot rugged coastlines without putting yourself or your gear at risk.
What to Bring: Gear Requirements
To maximize your experience during the technical field session, we recommend the following equipment:
Camera: Any DSLR or Mirrorless camera with full Manual (M) mode capabilities.
Lenses: A wide-angle zoom (e.g., 16-35mm) is ideal for grand coastal vistas, and a standard zoom (24-70mm) is excellent for compressing sea stacks and rocky details.
Tripod: A sturdy, reliable tripod is non-negotiable. We will be shooting long exposures in active surf and wind; a flimsy tripod will result in blurry images.
Filters: Solid Neutral Density (ND) filters (3, 6 and 10-stop) and Graduated ND filters will be fully utilized. If you don't own filters yet, hold off on purchasing—Please reach out to Chris prior to making your purchase for suggestions and during our Wednesday/Thursday prep lecture will break down exactly what to buy, and Chris will have limited filter systems available to try in the field.
Footwear & Clothing: Waterproof boots or water shoes with excellent grip for wet rocks. Dress in layers; Southern California coastal temperatures drop rapidly after the sun goes down.
The Elements: Safety & Weather Contingency
Landscape photography means working in partnership with nature. Because we are targeting specific tide flows and optimal lighting windows, safety is our absolute priority.
Tide Conditions: Locations (Los Angeles County vs. Orange County) are meticulously scouted based on safe, accessible tide charts for that specific date. We will never shoot in dangerous swell conditions and location adjustments will be made if those conditions are present.
Weather Policy: Workshops run rain or shine. In coastal photography, overcast skies or dramatic storm clearing conditions often produce the most breathtaking, fine-art portfolio imagery.
Extreme Weather Protocol: In the rare event of severe, unsafe weather or zero-visibility conditions, the field session will be rescheduled to a designated backup weekend date. If you cannot make the new date, your tuition will be fully credited toward any future masterclass.
Six Photographers. Zero Crowd.
Standing on a rocky shelf trying to shoot while dodging dozens of other photographers ruins the creative process. To preserve a luxury, unhurried, and deeply educational environment, this masterclass is strictly limited to 6 participants per session.
This ensures that Chris can spend dedicated, individual time with you to look through your viewfinder, troubleshoot your filter placements, and refine your artistic vision as the conditions evolve.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Because our group size is strictly capped at six participants to maintain an intimate learning environment, cancellations severely impact this workshop. Registration requires full payment up front. Cancellations made 30 days or more prior to the scheduled weekday online lecture will receive a full refund (minus a 6% credit card and administrative processing fee). Cancellations made within 30 days of the workshop are entirely non-refundable. Physical Liability & Conduct: All participants agree to cheerful cooperation and communication for the best possible result. The Client is responsible for their own conduct. If there is any active threat to the Photographer or their equipment by any subject, the Photographer reserves the right to end coverage immediately with no further liability and no refunds given. Outdoor workshops involve navigating wet, slick sand, uneven rock shelves, and unlit coastal terrain during both day, sunset, and twilight hours. The client acknowledges that participating in these activities carries inherent risks of injury, trip-and-fall hazards, rogue waves, and exposure to fluctuating weather conditions. By participating, the client confirms they are physically capable of navigating these coastal terrains, voluntarily assumes these inherent natural risks, and agrees to follow all safety instructions provided by the Photographer. The client is responsible for their own personal safety, physical conduct, and property at all times. Chris Ewen Crosby Photography maintains comprehensive commercial general liability insurance.
Artistic Style & Weather Agility: Client acknowledges that differences in locations, tidal flows, changing marine layers, and lighting allow for variations in the final photographic outcome. There is no knowing precisely what photos will be produced simply because this is an event in the future. The Photographer reserves the right to artistically interpret how to photograph a scene. If weather or ocean swell conditions turn completely torrential or dangerous and the Photographer determines field shooting is unsafe, safe alternative coverage, location adjustments, or a designated backup field date will be orchestrated.
Copyright & Reproductions: The Photographer owns the copyright to all instructional materials and images created by the instructor during the session, maintaining the exclusive right to make reproductions for portfolios, self-promotions, art exhibitions, or editorial display.
Travel Insurance Recommendation: Due to the strict financial thresholds of a small-group independent workshop, Chris Ewen Crosby Photography highly recommends that participants purchase independent travel or event cancellation insurance to protect their investment against unexpected life, travel, or medical events.
