Death Valley Masterclass 2026
November 13-16th, 2026 | An Intensive, Small-Group Desert Landscape Experience
About The Workshop
Join independent professional photographer Chris Ewen Crosby for an immersive, small-group landscape photography intensive in the heart of Death Valley National Park. November is the premier window to experience this surreal landscape. As the intense summer heat breaks and the crowds thin, the desert shifts into a quiet, dramatic masterpiece. The colossal scale of the Panamint Range frames a valley floor defined by sweeping sand dunes, geometric salt flats, and deeply eroded canyons, while the low-angle late-autumn sun creates long, striking shadows, brilliant highlights, and unparalleled textures.
This workshop is entirely independent and strictly limited to just 6 students. By moving away from crowded corporate tours, you are guaranteed an intimate, uncompromised learning environment with dedicated, one-on-one field instruction tailored specifically to your goals. Whether you are looking to master manual exposure fundamentals in complex light or refine advanced creative compositions across vast spaces, we will work side-by-side to translate your artistic vision into powerful, fine-art imagery.
The Masterclass Pillars
Engineered for Growth: Technical Precision Meets Creative Vision
This intensive is not a passive sightseeing tour; it is a hands-on technical and creative accelerator. Because our group is limited to just six photographers, our curriculum is entirely dynamic—adapting instantly to your current skill level. Whether you are looking to master the absolute fundamentals of manual shooting or expand into complex, fine-art digital blending, our Death Valley landscape photography training focuses deeply on three core pillars:
Pillar 1: The Technical Foundation
Flawless Exposure Management: Learn to look past your camera's automatic meter. We will master the exposure triangle and analyze histograms in real-time to capture the maximum dynamic range of Death Valley's stark, high-contrast desert sun and deep canyon shadows.
The Creative Use of Filters: Stop guessing which filter to use. Master the exact deployment of Circular Polarizers to manage glare on cracked mud and enrich deep sky gradients, alongside Neutral Density (ND) filters to control your exposure in bright desert light.
Tack-Sharp Execution: Learn in-the-field stabilization and tack-sharp focus techniques to ensure your images are crisp, clean, and ready for large-format gallery printing.
Pillar 2: Advanced Field Craft
Focus Stacking for Infinite Depth: Master the precise technical workflow of capturing multiple focal planes—ensuring razor-sharp detail from an intricate salt crystal inches from your lens all the way to the distant mountain peaks.
High Dynamic Range Bracketing: Learn how to shoot intentionally for exposure blending, ensuring you capture clean shadow detail in deep desert gashes and perfectly preserved highlights during explosive desert sunsets.
Composing Through Complexity: The vast scale of Death Valley can be visually overwhelming. I will teach you how to see past the openness, isolate your subject, and use geometric sand dune ridges, leading lines, and visual balance to create impactful compositions.
Pillar 3: Environmental Agility
Chasing the Light: Learn the art of weather tracking and visual scouting. You will discover how to read wind patterns on the dunes, analyze cloud cover, and position yourself to capture the fleeting, dramatic atmosphere that brings the desert to life.
The Itinerary & Field Philosophy
Our Philosophy: Nature does not adhere to a rigid clock, and neither do we.
To give you the highest-value experience possible, this masterclass utilizes a completely flexible, light-driven itinerary. Rather than locking ourselves into a strict timetable months in advance, our daily movements will be dictated entirely by real-time weather forecasts, shifting wind patterns on the dunes, cloud cover, and desert light progression.
We don't watch the clock—we watch the sky. While our schedule remains dynamic to maximize peak photographic conditions, you can expect our daily rhythm to follow this flow:
The Morning Session (Sunrise & Early Light): We will meet well before dawn to position ourselves deep in the landscape, capturing the first light striking the peaks of the Panamint Range, the cool blue shadows retreating from the sand dunes, and the quiet awakening of the vast salt flats.
The Mid-Day Break (Lunch & Rest): When the desert sun gets high and the light turns harsh, we pull back. This time is reserved for a hearty lunch, decompression, well-deserved rest, and checking gear so you stay fresh and sharp for the evening shoot.
The Afternoon & Evening Session (Golden Hour to Sunset): We regroup in the early afternoon as the shadows begin to lengthen and carve deep contrast into the landscape. We will explore the geometric textures of the canyons and mud playas, tracking the fading golden light as it sets the desert floor ablaze.
The Night Session (Optional Twilight/Astro): Landscape photography is demanding, and your energy is important. Death Valley is a Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Park. If weather conditions line up and the group’s energy levels allow, we may extend our day into twilight or brief night photography sessions to capture the staggering stars over the desert's immense silhouettes.
Logistics, Transportation, & Compliance
Operating with Integrity, Safety, and Full Legal Approval
Peace of mind is a vital part of a premium experience. This masterclass is fully authorized and operates under an officially approved National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization (CUA) permit for Death Valley National Park. Chris Ewen Crosby Photography is a fully registered business with a verified EIN and full commercial liability insurance. We respect the park, operate strictly within federal guidelines, and ensure your investment is entirely secure.
To maintain strict compliance with National Park Service regulations and ensure a seamless experience for everyone, please review the following parameters:
-
Participant Responsibility: All attendees are 100% responsible for arranging their own transportation to, from, and within Death Valley National Park.
Transit Regulations: Due to federal commercial passenger transit regulations, the instructor is legally prohibited from providing transportation or orchestrating group carpooling within the park boundaries. You must have your own reliable vehicle to navigate between locations.
Vehicle Requirements & Road Conditions: A standard passenger car is perfectly suitable for our entire planned itinerary, as all of our primary shooting locations are accessed via fully paved roads or very well maintained gravel roads. However, if you choose to explore off the beaten path independently before or after the workshop, a high-clearance vehicle (such as a crossover or SUV) is recommended for navigating Death Valley's more remote dirt roads and gravel washes.
Mandatory Fuel & Preparedness Alert: Death Valley is vast, remote, and cellular service is non-existent throughout most of the park. Fuel stations are extremely sparse and prices inside the park are premium. Please ensure your vehicle enters the park with a full tank of gas, carries a spare tire (and the knowledge of how to change it), and has plenty of drinking water. We will be operating in a rugged environment where self-reliance is key.
Daily Coordination: To make this frictionless, we will coordinate exact GPS meeting locations or prominent park landmarks prior to each shooting session.
-
If you are flying in for the workshop, the most convenient options include:
Harry Reid International Airport (LAS - Las Vegas): The closest major airport, located approximately 2 to 2.5 hours east of the park. This is the most reliable choice for flight availability, rental car options, and proximity to Death Valley.
Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) / Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Both are roughly a 4.5 to 5.5-hour drive to the park, offering alternative routes through the scenic Eastern Sierra if you prefer an extended road trip.
Eastern Sierra Regional Airport (BIH - Bishop): Located roughly 2.5 hours northwest of the park.
Important Note on BIH: While this is geographically close, commercial service (via United Airlines) is highly seasonal and heavily reduced or paused by November. If you choose this route, verify flight schedules and rental car availability thoroughly before booking. Private pilots will find this an excellent option.
-
Lodging, meals, and park entry fees are not included in the workshop tuition. Because mid-November is the premier window for ideal desert weather, lodging fills up very fast. We highly recommend securing your accommodations immediately upon registration.
Staying Inside the Park (Central Locations): For the most seamless experience and shortest morning commutes, look into booking a room at The Oasis at Death Valley Click to open side panel for more information (which includes the historic Inn and the family-friendly Ranch at Furnace Creek) or the Western-themed Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel Click to open side panel for more information . Both put you right in the middle of our geographic playground.
Gateway Communities & Rustic Lodging: If you are looking for an alternative basecamp, excellent lodge and cabin options are available further west at the Panamint Springs Resort Click to open side panel for more information , or you can look into motel options in the gateway towns of Beatty, Nevada (to the northeast) or Lone Pine, California (to the west). Keep in mind these locations will require a longer daily drive to meet up with the group.
Camping & RVs: If you plan to camp or bring a rig, the centrally located Furnace Creek Campground Click to open side panel for more information accepts reservations up to 6 months in advance directly through Recreation.gov. Other park options like Stovepipe Wells or Texas Springs operate on a mix of reservations and first-come, first-served parameters depending on the season.
Things to Bring
To ensure you get the absolute most out of our time in the field—and stay completely comfortable in changing desert conditions—please use this checklist to prepare your kit.
-
Camera Body: Any modern DSLR or Mirrorless camera with full manual control capabilities. (Bringing a backup body is highly recommended if you have one, as blowing desert sand can be unforgiving).
Lenses: * Wide-Angle Zoom (e.g., 16-35mm or 24-70mm): Essential for capturing the vast expanses of the salt flats, playas, and grand scale vistas.
Telephoto Zoom (e.g., 70-200mm or 100-400mm): Crucial for compressing sand dune ridges, isolating mountain textures, and picking out abstract geometric shapes in the canyons.
Sturdy Tripod & Ball Head: Essential for sharp exposures during high winds on the dunes, low-light blue hours, and optional astrophotography sessions.
Filters: A Circular Polarizer (to manage glare on baked mud and enrich blue skies) and Neutral Density (ND) filters.
Memory Cards & Batteries: Bring significantly more storage than you think you need, and at least 3-4 camera batteries. The remote nature of the park means we won't be near charging stations during our field sessions.
Cleaning Kit: Microfiber cloths, a rocket blower, and lens cleaning solution. Dust and fine sand are a guarantee in Death Valley; keeping your front elements clean is a daily task.
Headlamp or Flashlight: Required for navigating safely to and from our sunrise and sunset locations in the dark. (Bring extra batteries or a charging cable).
-
November brings beautiful daytime temperatures, but desert temperatures plummet rapidly once the sun drops behind the mountains. Layering is key:
Base & Mid-Layers: Lightweight, breathable shirts for the daytime, paired with a fleece or insulated jacket for cold mornings and late evenings.
Wind-Resistant Outer Shell: The sand dunes can get incredibly windy. A windbreaker or light shell will keep you warm and keep sand off your skin.
Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes with excellent traction for rocky canyons.
Tip: High-top boots or lightweight gaiters are highly recommended for keeping fine sand out of your shoes while trekking up the dunes.
Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable, even in November.
-
Hydration: A reusable water bottle or hydration bladder (minimum 2 liters capacity per session). The desert air is incredibly dry, and staying hydrated is critical for your energy levels and safety.
Snacks: Pack high-energy snacks (protein bars, nuts, fruit) to keep your energy levels up during our extended field sessions. (Note: Meals are not provided).
Comfort: A small, lightweight camping stool or folding chair can be a massive comfort upgrade while waiting for the light to shift during longer field sessions.
Physical Requirements
A Deliberate, Accessible Pace Designed for Everyone
While this masterclass is focused heavily on creating fine-art imagery rather than conquering intense backcountry peaks, it is fundamentally an active, outdoor field workshop. To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience, please review the physical expectations below:
Moderate Walking & Hiking: We will be walking daily to reach optimal vantage points. Most of our shooting locations are within 0.5 to 1.5 miles of our vehicles.
Terrain Conditions: Death Valley’s terrain is rugged and uneven. Our paths will take us off the pavement and onto loose gravel washes, rocky canyon floors, uneven salt formations, and soft, shifting sand dunes.
The Dune Factor: Walking on loose sand requires significantly more physical exertion than hiking on flat trails. Trekking up the slip-faces of sand dunes to capture clean ridges can be tiring, but we will take it slow.
Carrying Your Kit: You should be completely comfortable carrying your own camera bag, tripod, and personal supplies (minimum 2 liters of water plus layers) over these distances and up dune inclines.
Standing for Extended Periods: Waiting for the absolute perfect light means we will often be standing in position at dawn or dusk for 1 to 2 hours at a time.
No Photographer Left Behind: We will move at a comfortable, deliberate, and relaxed pace. This workshop is about slowing down, observing the landscape, and making intentional creative choices—not rushing. If you have any specific mobility concerns or questions about the desert terrain, please reach out via the contact form prior to booking so we can discuss accommodations.

Agreement & Legal Disclosures
By completing your registration and submitting payment for this workshop, you are entering into a binding contract and explicitly agreeing to Chris Ewen Crosby Photography’s full business Terms of Service, highlighted by the following key operating covenants:
Cancellation & Refund Policy: Because our group size is strictly capped at six participants, cancellations severely impact this independent workshop. The $350 deposit is strictly non-refundable under all circumstances. Cancellations made 60 days or more prior to the workshop (on or before September 14, 2026) will receive a full refund of any balance paid beyond the deposit. For cancellations made within 60 days of the workshop (after September 14, 2026), all fees are entirely non-refundable. However, if the workshop is fully sold out at the time of cancellation and we are able to successfully fill your specific vacant seat from our waitlist, you will receive a full refund of your balance payment (minus a 6% credit card processing fee) within two weeks of the workshop’s conclusion.
Physical Liability & Conduct: All participants agree to cheerful cooperation and communication for the best possible result. Client is responsible for their own conduct. If there is any active threat to the Photographer or their equipment by any subject, the Photographer reserves the right to end coverage immediately with no further liability and no refunds given. Outdoor workshops involve navigating dark, uneven, unlit, and remote desert wilderness terrain during both day and night. The client acknowledges that participating in these activities carries inherent risks of injury, trip-and-fall hazards on loose gravel, sand, or salt flats, and exposure to fluctuating desert weather conditions. By participating, the client confirms they are physically capable of navigating these terrains, voluntarily assumes these inherent natural risks, and agrees to follow all safety instructions provided by the Photographer. The client is responsible for their own personal safety, physical conduct, and property at all times. Chris Ewen Crosby Photography maintains comprehensive commercial general liability insurance as required for public land permitting.
Artistic Style & Weather Agility: Client acknowledges that differences in locations, subjects, and lighting allow for variations in the final photographic outcome. There is no knowing precisely what photos will be produced simply because this is an event in the future. The Photographer reserves the right to artistically interpret how to photograph a scene. If weather conditions turn completely torrential, dangerous, or high winds create hazardous blowing sand dust storms, and the Photographer determines field shooting is unsafe or impossible, safe alternative coverage or structural adjustments will be orchestrated.
Copyright & Reproductions: The Photographer owns the copyright to all instructional materials and images created by the instructor during the session, maintaining the exclusive right to make reproductions for portfolios, self-promotions, art exhibitions, or editorial display.
Travel Insurance Recommendation: Due to the strict financial thresholds of a small-group independent workshop, Chris Ewen Crosby Photography highly recommends that all participants purchase independent travel and trip cancellation insurance to protect their investment against unexpected life, travel, or medical events.
