Yosemite Autumn Masterclass 2026
October 23–26, 2026 | An Elite, Independent Field Intensive Limited to Just 6 Photographers
About The Workshop
Join independent professional photographer Chris Ewen Crosby for an immersive, small-group landscape photography intensive in the heart of Yosemite Valley. Late October is Yosemite’s most spectacular hidden season. As the summer crowds dissipate, the valley shifts into a quiet, dramatic masterpiece. The iconic granite monoliths of El Capitan and Half Dome frame a valley floor ablaze with golden black oaks and brilliant yellow cottonwoods, while the low-angle autumn sun creates deep shadows, striking highlights, and pristine river reflections.
This workshop is entirely independent and strictly limited to just 6 students. By moving away from crowded corporate tours, you are guaranteed an intimate, uncompromised learning environment with dedicated, one-on-one field instruction tailored specifically to your goals. Whether you are looking to master manual exposure fundamentals or refine advanced creative compositions, we will work side-by-side to translate your artistic vision into powerful, fine-art imagery.
The Masterclass Pillars
Engineered for Growth: Technical Precision Meets Creative Vision
This intensive is not a passive sightseeing tour; it is a hands-on technical and creative accelerator. Because our group is limited to just six photographers, our curriculum is entirely dynamic—adapting instantly to your current skill level. Whether you are looking to master the absolute fundamentals of manual shooting or expand into complex, fine-art digital blending, our Yosemite Valley landscape photography training focuses deeply on three core pillars:
Pillar 1: The Technical Foundation
Flawless Exposure Management: Learn to look past your camera's automatic meter. We will master the exposure triangle and analyze histograms in real-time to capture the maximum dynamic range of Yosemite’s stark granite-and-shadow contrasts.
The Creative Use of Filters: Stop guessing which filter to use. Master the exact deployment of Circular Polarizers to enrich autumn foliage and cut river glare, alongside Neutral Density (ND) filters for intentional, fine-art water motion.
Tack-Sharp Execution: Learn in-the-field stabilization and tack-sharp focus techniques to ensure your images are ready for large-format gallery printing.
Pillar 2: Advanced Field Craft
Focus Stacking for Infinite Depth: Master the precise technical workflow of capturing multiple focal planes—ensuring crisp detail from a golden leaf inches from your lens all the way to the top of El Capitan.
High Dynamic Range Bracketing: Learn how to shoot intentionally for exposure blending, ensuring you capture clean shadow detail and perfectly preserved highlights during explosive autumn sunsets.
Composing Through Complexity: Yosemite Valley can be visually overwhelming. I will teach you how to see past the chaos, isolate your subject, and use natural lines, scale, and visual balance to create impactful compositions.
Pillar 3: Environmental Agility
Chasing the Light: Learn the art of weather tracking and visual scouting. You will discover how to read fog patterns, analyze cloud cover, and position yourself ahead of clearing storms to capture fleeting, dramatic atmosphere.
The Itinerary & Field Philosophy
Our Philosophy: Nature does not adhere to a rigid clock, and neither do we.
To give you the highest-value experience possible, this masterclass utilizes a completely flexible, light-driven itinerary. Rather than locking ourselves into a strict timetable months in advance, our daily movements will be dictated entirely by real-time weather forecasts, clearing valley storms, fog patterns, and Sierra Nevada autumn color progression.
We don't watch the clock—we watch the sky. While our schedule remains dynamic to maximize peak photographic conditions, you can expect our daily rhythm to follow this flow:
The Morning Session (Sunrise & Early Light): We will meet well before dawn to position ourselves at key locations, capturing the first light striking the granite peaks, morning river mist, and the quiet awakening of the valley floor.
The Mid-Day Break (Lunch & Rest): When the sun gets high and the light turns harsh, we pull back. This time is reserved for a hearty lunch, decompression, well-deserved rest, and optional independent scouting so you stay fresh and sharp.
The Afternoon & Evening Session (Golden Hour to Sunset): We regroup in the early afternoon as the shadows begin to lengthen. We will explore the brilliant autumn color transitions of the black oaks and cottonwoods, tracking the fading golden light across El Capitan, Half Dome, and pristine valley reflections.
The Night Session (Optional Twilight/Astro): Landscape photography is demanding, and your energy is important. If weather conditions line up and the group’s energy levels allow, we may extend our day into twilight or brief night photography sessions to capture the dark skies over Yosemite's immense silhouettes.
Logistics, Transportation, & Compliance
Operating with Integrity, Safety, and Full Legal Approval
Peace of mind is a vital part of a premium experience. This masterclass is fully authorized and operates under an officially approved National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization (CUA) permit for Yosemite National Park. Chris Ewen Crosby Photography is a fully registered business with a verified EIN and full commercial liability insurance. We respect the park, operate strictly within federal guidelines, and ensure your investment is entirely secure.
To maintain strict compliance with National Park Service regulations and ensure a seamless experience for everyone, please review the following parameters:
-
Participant Responsibility: All attendees are 100% responsible for arranging their own transportation to, from, and within Yosemite National Park.
Transit Regulations: Due to federal commercial passenger transit regulations, the instructor is legally prohibited from providing transportation or orchestrating group carpooling within the park boundaries. You must have your own reliable vehicle to navigate between locations.
Vehicle Requirements: Any standard passenger car is entirely sufficient for our outings. All roads throughout Yosemite Valley are fully paved and well-maintained.
Mandatory Snow Chains Alert: Late October weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Federal law requires all vehicles entering Yosemite during winter driving conditions to carry tire chains or cables in their possession—this strictly applies to 4WD, AWD, and rental vehicles. If a sudden autumn storm rolls in, park rangers will check vehicles at the entrance gates and deny entry to anyone without them. Please ensure your vehicle is equipped with a matching set of chains or traction cables, and check local Eastern Sierra road conditions and rental agency policies prior to arriving.
Daily Coordination: To make this frictionless, we will coordinate exact GPS meeting locations across the valley floor prior to each shooting session.
-
If you are flying in for the workshop, the most convenient options include:
Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT): The closest airport, located approximately 2.5 hours south of Yosemite Valley.
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) / San Francisco International (SFO) / Oakland International (OAK): All are roughly a 3.5 to 4-hour drive to the valley floor, offering extensive rental car options.
-
Lodging, meals, and park entry fees are not included in the workshop tuition. Because late October is an incredibly popular window for autumn foliage and ideal weather, we highly recommend securing your lodging immediately upon registration.
Staying Inside the Valley: For the most seamless experience with zero morning commute, look into The Yosemite Valley Lodge, The Ahwahnee, or the heated tent cabins at Curry Village.
Staying Outside the Park: Excellent lodge and hotel options are available just outside the park gates in El Portal (roughly a 20–30 minute drive to our meeting spots), as well as the gateway communities of Mariposa or Groveland.
Camping: If you plan to camp or bring an RV, site reservations must be made well in advance directly through Recreation.gov (Upper Pines, Lower Pines, and North Pines campgrounds).
Things to Bring
To ensure you get the absolute most out of our time in the field—and stay completely comfortable in changing mountain conditions—please use this checklist to prepare your kit.
-
Camera Body: A DSLR or Mirrorless camera with full manual exposure control capabilities. Bringing a backup body is highly recommended if you have one, but not required.
Lenses: A versatile focal range allows you to capture both the sweeping grand landscapes and the intimate details of the valley. We recommend:
Wide-Angle Zoom (e.g., 16-35mm): Essential for expansive valley floor perspectives, towering granite walls, and reflections.
Standard Zoom (e.g., 24-70mm): The perfect walk-around range for natural framing and environmental portraits of the landscape.
Telephoto Zoom (e.g., 70-200mm or 100-400mm): Crucial for isolating distant granite textures, capturing light hitting the peaks, and compressing autumn foliage patterns.
Tripod: A sturdy, reliable tripod is mandatory. Autumn mornings can bring brisk winds, and a solid tripod is non-negotiable for low-light tracking, precise compositions, and creative long-exposure work.
Filters: A Circular Polarizer (CPL) is highly recommended—it is the single most important tool for cutting glare on wet river rocks and saturating the brilliant yellow and orange autumn leaves. Neutral Density (ND) filters (e.g., a 6-stop or 10-stop) are excellent if you want to experiment with smooth, fine-art water movement.
Accessories: * Several extra memory cards (always empty them before day one).
Multiple spare camera batteries (cold autumn temperatures drain battery life rapidly; always keep a fresh one in an inside jacket pocket close to your body heat).
Remote shutter release cable or electronic trigger (for sharp, vibration-free long exposures).
A headlamp or flashlight with a red-light mode (vital for navigating safely to and from our sunrise and sunset locations in the dark).
A lightweight rain cover or protective sleeve for your camera bag and body, just in case a sudden autumn storm or valley mist rolls in.
-
The key to staying sharp in the field is a proper layering system. Late October weather in the Sierra Nevada varies dramatically between the shadows and the sun.
Base & Mid-Layers: Moisture-wicking base layers paired with a high-quality fleece or lightweight down jacket.
Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof shell jacket to lock in heat during stationary sunrise and sunset shoots.
Cold Weather Accessories: A warm beanie/hat, insulated gloves, and high-quality wool hiking socks are essential. Standing still while waiting for peak light can get incredibly chilly very quickly.
Sun Protection: A brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and sunscreen for the bright mid-day sun.
Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes with excellent traction for navigating dirt trails, granite steps, and sandy riverbanks.
-
Hydration: Please carry a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder. The mountain air is incredibly dry, and staying hydrated prevents fatigue.
Snacks: Pack high-energy snacks (protein bars, nuts, fruit) to keep your energy levels up during our extended field sessions. (Note: Meals are not provided).
Comfort: A small, lightweight camping stool or folding chair can be a massive comfort upgrade while waiting for the light to shift during longer field sessions.
Physical Requirements
A Deliberate, Accessible Pace Designed for Everyone
While this masterclass is focused heavily on creating fine-art imagery rather than conquering intense backcountry peaks, it is fundamentally an active, outdoor field workshop. To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience, please review the physical expectations below:
Moderate Walking & Hiking: We will be walking daily to reach optimal vantage points. Most of our shooting locations are within 0.5 to 1.5 miles of our vehicles.
Terrain Conditions: While Yosemite Valley is generally flat, our paths will take us off the paved asphalt and onto established dirt trails, loose gravel paths, sandy riverbanks, and occasional uneven granite steps or slick rocks near the water.
Carrying Your Kit: You should be completely comfortable carrying your own camera bag, tripod, and personal supplies (water/layers) over these distances.
Standing for Extended Periods: Waiting for the absolute perfect light means we will often be standing in position at dawn or dusk for 1 to 2 hours at a time.
No Photographer Left Behind: We will move at a comfortable, deliberate, and relaxed pace. This workshop is about slowing down, observing the landscape, and making intentional creative choices—not rushing to the next spot. If you have any specific mobility concerns or questions about the terrain, please reach out via the contact form prior to booking so we can discuss accommodations.

Physical Liability & Conduct: All participants agree to cheerful cooperation and communication for the best possible result. Client is responsible for their own conduct. If there is any active threat to the Photographer or their equipment by any subject, the Photographer reserves the right to end coverage immediately with no further liability and no refunds given. Outdoor workshops involve navigating dark, uneven, and unlit wilderness terrain during both day and night. The client acknowledges that participating in these activities carries inherent risks of injury, trip-and-fall hazards, and exposure to fluctuating weather conditions. By participating, the client confirms they are physically capable of navigating these terrains, voluntarily assumes these inherent natural risks, and agrees to follow all safety instructions provided by the Photographer. The client is responsible for their own personal safety, physical conduct, and property at all times. Chris Ewen Crosby Photography maintains comprehensive commercial general liability insurance as required for public land permitting.
Artistic Style & Weather Agility: Client acknowledges that differences in locations, subjects, and lighting allow for variations in the final photographic outcome. There is no knowing precisely what photos will be produced simply because this is an event in the future. The Photographer reserves the right to artistically interpret how to photograph a scene. If weather conditions turn completely torrential and the Photographer determines field shooting is unsafe or impossible, safe alternative coverage or structural adjustments will be orchestrated.
Copyright & Reproductions: The Photographer owns the copyright to all instructional materials and images created by the instructor during the session, maintaining the exclusive right to make reproductions for portfolios, self-promotions, art exhibitions, or editorial display.
Travel Insurance Recommendation: Due to the strict financial thresholds of a small-group independent workshop, Chris Ewen Crosby Photography highly recommends that all participants purchase independent travel and trip cancellation insurance to protect their investment against unexpected life or medical events.
