Master the Art of Astronomical Alignments
Join fine-art landscape photographer Chris Ewen Crosby for an elite, two-part masterclass. Learn how to track rare astronomical alignments, calculate exact lens focal compressions, and balance high-dynamic-range exposures to capture the moon rising directly over an iconic architectural landmark before it closes to the public for the next 16 months.
The Moon Moves Fast. Your Technical Precision Has to Move Faster.
Capturing a massive moon perfectly aligned with a major structural landmark is one of the most intoxicating pursuits in photography—but it requires flawless timing. Because this specific astronomical alignment occurs just before sunset, we will be shooting during peak Golden Hour.
This gives us a rare, spectacular lighting window where the Vincent Thomas Bridge is bathed in warm sunlight while a massive, detailed moon breaks the horizon. But you only get a window of a few fleeting minutes before the moon climbs too high. This workshop eliminates the guesswork, giving you the exact settings to balance daylight, shadow, and lunar detail simultaneously.
🌗 A Rare "Equilibrium" Exposure
Most astronomical alignments force you to choose between a perfectly exposed bridge or a perfectly exposed moon because the contrast gap after dark is too brutal. However, because our September 25th alignment occurs exactly 16 minutes before sunset (with the moon at a precise 2.99° elevation), we hit a rare atmospheric phenomenon: Lunar Exposure Equilibrium. The ambient daylight naturally balances the moon's surface brightness. This allows you to capture full lunar crater detail and the physical green bridge structure in a single, clean exposure—without complex digital blending.
Engineered for Creative Mastery
Part I – The Field Preparation (Online Lecture)
September 23rd, 2026 via Google Meet (6:30PM - 8:00PM)
Mastery begins before your tripod legs touch the pavement. In this interactive technical briefing, we will break down how to utilize astronomical apps like PhotoPills to plot precise alignments, analyze atmospheric haze, and map out focal length compression math. We will also deep-dive into the critical gear setups, stabilization techniques, and the precise single-exposure manual settings required to retain sharp details in both the bright lunar surface and the sunlit urban landscape.
Part II – The Moonrise Session (In-the-Field)
September 25th, 2026, 5:30PM - 7:30PM| San Pedro, CA
Meet on-location at a meticulously scouted vantage point overlooking the iconic Vincent Thomas Bridge. Standing side-by-side in a hyper-intimate group, you'll learn the exact exposure adjustments needed as the moon rises at 6:12 PM in full Golden Hour light, how to manage your composition as the sun sets at 6:45 PM, and how to keep shooting a brilliant twilight portfolio piece as we transition into Blue Hour and the bridge structural lights kick on.
What You'll Master
The Geometry of Compression: Discover how distance and focal lengths (70mm to 400mm+) dictate the perceived size of the moon relative to the bridge, creating that jaw-dropping, high-impact scale.
High-Contrast Dynamic Range: Learn how to balance high-contrast scenes, utilizing natural ambient light to balance the extreme brightness of a rising moon in a single frame without blowing out highlight data.
Sharpness & Lunar Motion Blur: Master the specific shutter-speed thresholds required to freeze the moon's physical travel across the night sky, eliminating soft edges and digital ghosting.
Astronomical Plotting: Learn the professional planning tools and safety protocols required to confidently scout, time, and execute alignment shoots completely on your own in the future.
What to Bring: Gear Requirements
To maximize your experience during the technical field session, we recommend the following equipment:
Camera: Any DSLR or Mirrorless camera with full Manual (M) mode capabilities and good high-ISO performance.
Lenses: A telephoto or super-telephoto zoom lens is absolutely required for this masterclass to compress the scene (e.g., 70-200mm, 100-400mm, or fixed telephotos).
Tripod: A heavy-duty, highly sturdy tripod is non-negotiable. We will be shooting at massive focal lengths where the slightest wind vibration or unstable leg placement will completely ruin image sharpness.
Remote Shutter Release: An electronic cable release, wireless remote, or utilizing your camera’s built-in 2-second delay is required to ensure zero camera shake when tripping the shutter.
Clothing: Dress in warm layers. Southern California vantage points get surprisingly cold, breezy, and damp once twilight drops and the night air sets in.
The Elements: Atmospheric Clarity & Safety
Alignment photography means working in partnership with both urban environments and astronomical tracking. Because we are targeting a highly specific, time-sensitive moonrise during the day-to-night transition, visibility is our absolute priority.
Atmospheric Conditions (The Marine Layer): High-altitude haze or a low-lying SoCal marine layer can drastically alter horizon visibility. We meticulously track real-time satellite clarity up to the hour. If coastal fog impacts our primary view, proactive vantage point adjustments will be made to ensure the best possible clear sightlines for the Golden Hour alignment.
Weather Policy: Workshops run clear or overcast. A few passing clouds during sunset can actually add incredible, dramatic color and texture to the sky behind the moon and bridge.
Terrain & Equipment Safety: While the main moonrise happens in daylight, we will continue shooting into the Blue Hour transition. A small flashlight or headlamp is recommended to help you easily see your gear dials and safely pack up your tripod once the light completely drops.
Six Photographers. Zero Crowd.
Standing packed like sardines on a public walkway trying to shoot while bumping tripods with dozens of other people ruins the creative process. To preserve a luxury, unhurried, and deeply educational environment, this masterclass is strictly limited to 6 participants.
This ensures that Chris can spend dedicated, individual time with you to look through your viewfinder, troubleshoot your focal alignment, fine-tune your tracking, and refine your artistic vision as the moon climbs past the suspension cables.

Don’t worry! While live attendance is highly encouraged so you can ask questions in real time, the entire 1.5-hour Technical & Alignment Planning Briefing will be recorded. All registered participants will receive a private, streaming-only replay link the following morning, which will remain active for 7 days leading up to our field session.
-
No, neutral density (ND) or graduated filters are not required for this masterclass. Because the moonrise happens at 6:12 PM during late Golden Hour and shifts directly into Blue Hour, we will be managing the high dynamic range using precise bracketed manual exposures and shutter speed control, rather than physical glass filters. However, in some cases and graduated ND may help to balance the exposure of a bright sky and a dark foreground. A night sky filter maybe assist after the alignment as we shoot into blue hour.
-
This field session is rated as low difficulty. We’ll be shooting extremely close to our parked cars. Unlike a coastal shoot, we will not be trekking across wet sand or climbing over slippery tide rocks. However, our meticulously scouted vantage points are located on public urban terrain, which may require standing for extended periods on paved or unpaved paths. You should be comfortable carrying your own tripod and gear bag a short distance from where we park.
-
Workshops run clear or overcast, as passing clouds during sunset can add incredible fine-art drama to the sky behind the bridge. Because this alignment is highly time-sensitive, we strictly monitor coastal marine layers and atmospheric haze up to the hour. If thick fog completely obstructs our primary view, proactive vantage point adjustments will be made. In the rare event of torrential rain or total zero-visibility conditions that make shooting impossible, the field session will be rescheduled to a designated backup date, or you will receive full tuition credit toward a future masterclass.
-
To achieve the striking visual compression where the moon looks massive inside the bridge tower, a telephoto lens is essential. We highly recommend a lens that can reach at least 70mm to 400mm (on a full-frame sensor). If you are shooting with a crop-sensor camera, a 50-300mm lens works beautifully as well. We’ll be arriving early so you can decide what focal length will fit your artistic desires. If you plan well you should be able to use multiple focal lengths to have variety of shots to come home with.
-
This specific workshop focuses entirely on the planning, astronomical charting, and in-the-field technical execution of the shoot. While we will thoroughly discuss the exposure-bracketing techniques required to capture the full dynamic range during the online prep lecture, digital post-processing and Lightroom/Photoshop blending workflows are not included. If you want to master the digital editing side of this image, Chris recommends adding a Private Editing Session after the workshop.
-
Absolutely. Safety is our primary priority. Our specific vantage points have been thoroughly scouted not just for the perfect visual alignment, but for safe group access, stable footing, and secure parking. Because we will be staying past sunset to capture the Blue Hour light trails, shooting in an intimate group of six provides an incredibly safe, focused, and comfortable environment for everyone.
